Age-related decline in cognitive function manifests as decrease in attention, working memory, long-term memory, perception, in addition to defective speech and language, decision making, and executive control.Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is characterized by subnormal cognitive performance, especially in terms of memory. According to the International Working Group on MCI, individuals with MCI show evidence of cognitive decline, despite normal activities of daily living. Nearly a third of all patients with MCI develop dementia within 2 years,A fifth of all patients with MCI develop Alzheimer’s disease (AD) within 2 years after diagnosis. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disease. It is prevalent in 5–10% of people aged 65 years and older and almost 50% of patients over 80.AD accounts for 60%–80% of all dementia cases including nearly 46.8 million people worldwide, with an expected 131.5 million cases by 2050.While drugs may have the risk of side effects, nutritional approaches appear to be a superior and promising strategy in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as AD. Poor nutrition is strongly linked to AD. Hence the use of functional foods, dietary supplements and nutraceuticals is proposed to be an effective therapeutic intervention in the management of AD. Recent studies have focused on the use of dietary supplements and natural products with multiple neuroprotective activities, which pose little or no side effects compared to synthetic drugs. In this book, we will review some of the most significant research involving nutritional strategies targeting AD. The work includes several original research studies published in peer-reviewed scientific journals over the recent past (5 years), and copius references to highlight the evidence supporting or discouraging the use of dietary and nutritional interventions in an effort to manage AD. The following topics are discussed in detail with all the cutting-edge scientific evidence, and comprehensive lists of references for further study or research.
